unpublished work is protected by common law, but to make things official and to
deter others from copying your hard work, it is still best to have your work
registered with the Library of Congress.
An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is necessary, so distributors can
obtain computerized information regarding your book.
Most retail stores require this number in order to stock and invoice your
book.
Stores also require books to have barcodes on the back book cover. This is
needed for barcode readers, which stores now utilize to help keep track of
inventories and eliminate keystrokes. Most stores require barcodes before they
will carry your book.
